Ein Blitz ist ein natürlicher Lichtbogen infolge einer elektrostatischen Entladung zwischen Wolken oder zwischen Wolken und der Erde. Die Vorgänge bei der Blitzentstehung sind jedoch deutlich komplexer als bei reinen Funkenentladungen. Blitze treten während Gewittern auf und verursachen Donner.

Wegen seines schnellen Zündens ist der Blitz ein Synonym für hohe Geschwindigkeit.

Umgangssprachlich werden kurzzeitige helle Lichterscheinungen unabhängig von ihrer Ursache als Blitz bezeichnet.
